back when rtvs originally announced the Spamton Sweepstakes livestream, I had alarms on my phone that went off every hour daily from 7am-10pm so I wouldnt lose track of time. and I renamed my 8pm alarm "SPAMTON" to remind me to tune into the stream. to this day I have never turned off or renamed that alarm. 8pm every day is spamton time for me

A Quick(?) Update

Hey, everyone. I never know what to say, and then because of that, day after day passes in silence. I guess I just want to say that yes, I’m still working on chapter 21 of Amalgamate, and also that I’m sorry for the absolutely ridiculous amount of time that’s passed between chapters. I know I’ve been “absent” a lot online, too. Rarely commenting on fics, taking days to respond to DMs, hardly livestreaming…

I’m sure it’s a no-brainer that the kind of person who writes a story like Amalgamate isn’t exactly a “well” person. Those who follow me on social media for my cosplay and art content see such a small, curated snapshot of reality. The smile doesn’t exist until I hit record, and it ends when the video stops. So every day, my followers see videos of me at my “best,” but I film as much as possible on a single day because the next “good” day could be weeks away. Sometimes I worry that the next good day isn’t going to come at all.

The most frustrating thing about it is that I’m well aware of the cycle. Every year, starting in August, the darkness starts to creep in. By September, it takes hold. By the end of October, it’s inescapable. November passes, then December. Last year, December almost ended in the worst way possible, but as cheesy as it sounds, Amalgamate convinced me to turn it around. I thought, “What kind of example am I setting here? How can I let people down like this?” 

So this year, I tried to prepare for the inevitable… and failed. I thought if I could post chapter 21 before the end of August, I could just curl up alone and wait for 2024 to be over. But then everything went to hell and I missed my goal, and when the darkness started to creep in at the edges, I tried to make another goal, and then another, but every single time, I was dragged right back down.

Then a mini cycle started to form within the larger cycle. Every day that goes by in which I don’t post chapter 21, I think the chapter needs to be even better to make up for how long I’ve kept everyone waiting. Then the pressure overwhelms me, and the terrible thoughts creep in, and then the guilt sets in, and then I’m curled up in the corner again with nothing accomplished. DMs are left to fester. Fics I want to read collect dust. I drift away, and I let everyone else drift away, and I sit and stare and wish things could be different. 

I suppose it’s not all doom and gloom though. I tried really hard to work on myself this past month, and I was actually successful in a few ways. I tried to clean myself up, and in some ways, I did a lot better than expected. I’m hoping that means I can turn things around again. I want to finish chapter 21, catch up on all the fics I want to read, start drawing regularly, and be an active participant online instead of just tossing out content in a desperate attempt to keep up appearances.

But it’s such an uphill battle. I feel worse now than I did last year, so I’m trying really hard to cling to that self-awareness and prevent things from going the way they did in 2023. But I know that’s not realistic. Everything in life is worse than before, and I see no evidence that it will improve anytime soon. So that means it’s on me to simply power through it and do the best I can.

So, for the sake of my own sanity, chapter 21 will get finished as soon as possible. I don’t know how much longer I can survive with this awful feeling, and that feeling will go away once the next chapter’s posted. In the meantime, I’ll try not to miss the mark with all my other goals. No matter what, I’m going to finish my Halloween cosplay special for 2024. Last year, I had some funds to help me. This year I don’t because I dropped out of most of my conventions, made a lot less art, and overall just kinda gave up on everything. 

But it’s not too late. I’ll dive into as many dumpsters as I have to in order to make a Halloween cosplay that will hopefully be as good as Mangle. This year, I’m gonna be cosplaying Spamton NEO – which is probably cheating since I’m already a failed content creator past their prime who has no choice but to wear clown makeup and wave their arms at anyone who happens to scroll by.

I never know what to say, so I guess all I can really say is that I’m trying my absolute best. I know my best is often really disappointing, but it really is the best I can manage sometimes. Even when I’m distant, just know that it doesn’t mean I love you all less, or appreciate you all less, or feel any less gratitude. It just means I’m in the dark, and I’m trying to crawl my way back. Which is very tiring. And overwhelming. But I never stop trying. In part because you all mean so much to me. Last year would’ve ended differently if that wasn’t the case.

Anyway, I don’t know what else to say other than thank you all for your continued support. I’ll try to make it all up to you and then some. Maybe this year I can end things on a high note for once. I’ll certainly give it my best shot.

Uuuh… I guess if you do want to see me at my best, though, you can always follow me on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. That’s the best version of me in between Amalgamate chapters, and I recently shared a ton of Danganronpa cosplay videos because of Dragon Con. I have a Patreon now too, and even though it’s a ghost town, I’m still posting as much content there as possible. I’ll keep dancing until the stage lights are forcibly shut down. I think that's the best way to guarantee that I can turn this ship around.

THEORY: The Butterfly Effect

I'd like to thank VGFM for forming the basis of this theory with theirs, the excellent "The True Identity and Importance of "Everyman"". I highly recommend reading it!

A while ago, VGFM brought to my attention the presence of a butterfly motif in UTDR.

They noted the presence of butterflies in three specific places: Whimsun/Whimsalot's bullets, Reaper Bird/Everyman's bullets, and King's cape.

I'd like to expound on this by analyzing these usages, and also add another two instances of a butterfly motif that, all together, lead me to a conclusion about what butterflies in UTDR could mean.

1: Everyman's bullets

Probably the most memorable appearance of butterflies across Undertale and Deltarune. It's our pal Everyman!

In case it was possible to forget, here's a refresher: the amalgamate Reaper Bird in the True Lab features a guest star in their attacks. The strange, embryonic "Everyman" initially just stands there. Then their face is painfully eaten by butterflies, and they subsequently will go on the attack. Everyman has since cameoed in Deltarune a few times, but the butterflies have been conspicuously absent.

Still, this seems to be the character most obviously linked to butterflies so far.

As for what butterflies could mean here, there's only one really major thing to note: Everyman was not aggressive until the butterflies infested their face. In one of their attacks, the butterflies even seem to be "puppeting" a staggering Everyman, and are the ones actually inflicting damage by flying out of their head.

Does this mean the butterflies represent aggression? I'm not so sure. However, as we're about to see, they do seem to appear a lot in the context of antagonism.

2: King's Mantle

Another butterfly was visible in Deltarune Chapter 1, taking the shape of King's... cape?

At the time of VGFM's theory, we didn't have the Chapter 1 livestream, but Toby gave us this one for free: "Cool mantle, bro."

Setting aside the weighted term "mantle" for this theory (but rest assured, you're in good company thinking about the SkyMantle and ShadowMantle), I'd like to focus on the King himself.

Firstly: Many people refer to this character as the "Chaos King," likely due to the titular track that plays during his fight. But the character himself is only ever referred to as "(a) King." Let's squirrel this away for later.

Secondly: During said battle with King, during which he has his greyscale mantle, he is able to use a greyscale "tail" from his belly to attack us by slightly manipulating the UI.

King uses that grey belly tail to drag our box around the screen and into bullets in various ways, almost reminiscent of fighting Sans. As far as I can remember, (correct me if I'm wrong), he's one of the only DR characters who do this (ETA: @potabo pointed out Queen also has a UI-affecting attack, as does Spamton in a scrapped attack).

But after the King's mantle has flown away, we only see him using basic spade bullets. We never see the belly tail again.

Now, of course, this could just be gameplay/story dichotomy - we're in a cutscene, not in battle, so of course we don't see any grander attacks.

But it would be interesting if the mantle itself was what granted him the meta power to manipulate the UI. If true, then by extension, this might associate the butterfly motif with similar powers.

Remember what I said about "Chaos King" not being his real name? That begs the question: why is the track titled that?

3: CHAOS SABER

This one's a little sneaky.

We've all probably noticed by now that Asriel's battle is chock full of Deltarune references, and plot elements we weren't even aware of. There's plenty of theories and speculation out there about that.

But one of the elements flying under the radar is his attack "CHAOS SABER."

Not the Kris-like sword attack, or the unusual animations, or the Deltarune-like sparkles at the end... but the very sword sprites themselves.

Take a look again.

Yep - when put together, the two swords Asriel uses form a butterfly shape. (They're also reflections of each other...)

What do we know about this instance of the butterfly motif? Not much, really, aside from the use of swords to cut, the production of those Darkner-representing stars, and the title: "CHAOS SABER."

Uh-oh. Maybe we shouldn't speak too loudly of "chaos..."

4: Jevil's voiceline

Just a small one, but I think worth noting: Jevil, a character strongly associated with Chaos, has the voiceline "METAMORPHOSIS."

Yes, it's one of his references to those Line stickers. But face it: when you hear "metamorphosis," what's the first thing that comes to mind?

It may not directly spell out the word "butterfly." But fellow Line reference "I CAN DO ANYTHING" doesn't directly spell out "freedom," anyway, and that's an actual confirmed Jevil motif.

All I'm saying is, it's not out of the question that the "METAMORPHOSIS" line might tie into this ongoing butterfly motif.

5: Whimsun/Whimsalot's Bullets

You may have gone through this list wondering: where are Whimsun and Whimsalot? What profound meaning do they have? What fascinating secrets can we glean from their depiction of butterflies?

The answer is: I dunno lol.

Sorry, there was a reason I shunted them off to the end. Unfortunately, I just can't find anything that sorely sticks out! Whimsalot is one of the CORE enemies, sure, and those seem Deltarune-relevant in some way, but otherwise... I just don't know! If anyone has more profound insight to offer here, feel free to sound off - I'd love to hear your ideas. Personally, I'm gonna throw in the towel until we get another chapter.

CONCLUSION

You've probably noticed by now, but there seems to be a common thread throughout half of these instances.

Jevil, "Chaos King," "CHAOS SABER"...

In Undertale and Deltarune, butterflies may represent CHAOS.

And honestly, it makes more sense than you'd think.

The butterfly effect is pretty well-referenced in media: a single flap of a butterfly's wings, rippling out to eventually cause a hurricane somewhere else.

And what discipline, exactly, does the butterfly effect fall under? Chaos theory.

If this is the imagery Toby Fox is trying to invoke, I wonder if our actions won't "ripple out" in a great chain of cause-and-effect, either. After all, he did state some things "only appear random. All chaos is ordered."

As for what this means for the affected characters, the one that jumps out the most as an example is Everyman. Again, in Reaper Bird's attack, the poor fellow appears to be engulfed by butterflies - so, metaphorically, by CHAOS. Only after this do they actually become aggressive. And interestingly, Toby Fox also remarks on how the Dark Fountain may have changed King's behavior.

After all, in terms of the greater plot, the most solid thing we know about the role of CHAOS is that it will apparently result when the Dark Fountains fill the sky, and cause the Roaring.

So, is "Chaos King" actually King altered by the CHAOS-causing presence of the fountain? How many more benign characters like Everyman have been spurred into aggression in this way? And how long before all this mounting CHAOS becomes a true Roaring?

It seems we'll have to keep an eye on the butterflies.

...Well, that's all I've got for today. Feel free to leave your essays about Whimsun being the most important Undertale character - once things ripple out enough, you might just be right.

How fucking cool is it that you get to live while deltarune is still being released? Like i was too young to be interested in homestuck while it was coming out, and i got into amphibia right after it finished, so i never got to experience the hype around cascade or true colors. And ill be long dead by the time however many thousands of shows and music and books that i otherwise wouldve loved to see do come out. But i was there for the spamton sweepstakes!! I saw the SVN livestream! This even goes for other current media, like how i get to talk with my friends about new amazing digital circus episodes!! Ive been to many twenty øne piløts concerts, and i plan on going to many more! I watched the live premiere of overcompensate when i was staying home from school!! I watched mr samuels teatime stories for good kids and confused adults as it came out!! It hurts so much to know that i missed out on a lot of really cool things, like i wish i was a college student in ann arbor in 2002 so i couldve watched tally hall grow, how cool would that have been!!!! I wish i couldve seen all the theories around the owl house and gravity falls back in season one!!!! But there are so many experiences i have had and will get to have in tons of different fandoms that are just as beautiful. <3 <3 <3

I know I am maybe over thinking this but, why was the "Lancer Spin" sprites from the Spamton Sweepstakes made?

I mean it could have been done for a one off gag, but I still feel like there has to be a sightly bigger reason to use it instead of the standard Lancer sprite. Most of the pages in the sweepstakes had a purpose, with even some of the more jokey pages having some meaning. The Ice-e cryptid page at first reads like a humorous account of an event in Noelle's childhood, but the page it links (or at least tries to link) has serious implications about Dess's role in the plot. The "Creepy" Spamton plush page is later used in the Livestream Finale. The blog page with Berdly exist to give characterization. Every other page is either lore, or sneak peaks and/or links to another page that does. Even the page with the gumball machine might mean something. The only two I can think that doesn't fit are the Inu page (though this likely just Toby referencing himself), the pips page, and the Lancer page, or so we think. There are certain things about this sprite that has gotten me thinking

At first I thought it could have been for background tiling purposes (the sprite has an even 1:1 ratio and is easily distinguable, making it ideal instead of Lancer's default sprite), but the page the weather duo/Elnino & Lanina page's background gif is not exactly even, and it is clear that these are these are their default sprites, so that theory was thrown out, and so I started to think about a reason outside of the website for these to be made.

Second, I thought these might fill in the similar roles the plush sprites were made, cute little versions of the characters that can be given to them or be put in their room, which is seen to be the case with both Berdly and Susie respectively, though Ralsei's and Noelle's go unused. However looking at them side by side show that these are clearly in two different styles (sorry for the low quality, only image I could easily find)

The plushies have a soild black outline with the their respective character's color palettes, but Lancer's has a colored outline with a more "pastel" palette. Not only that, but lancer is forward facing, with additional sprites to convey the spin. So that idea was thrown out. So where does that leaves us? Well I have two additional ideas about what it could be used for, with one being a bit of an extension of the other, though, this "extended" version of the idea I don't really like because it looks into Toby Fox media that isn't directly related to Deltarune.

One, The Sprite was made for a retro 8-BIT NES/Retro Gaming section. The sprite's palette is similar/close to that of an actual NES palette (example)

We can see Lancer's palette here is possibly based off the NES palette, or at least invoke it. Not only that, but Lancer's sprite fits cleanly into a 16x16 area, the size that many sprites took during this era (think: Mario's NES sprite before going super). There are some stuff that could also point to this being used in a NES inspired area. One of UT/DR's inspirations is Yume Nikki, whose most famous influence is probably the appearance of the Mystery Man sprite, with one thing that game has are sections called the "Famicom Worlds," Places that not only use an NES/FC tileset and sprites but also change the UI to match. I bring the UI bit up because, remember, Lancer is part of our Key Items, meaning it's possible while in an NES section, Lancer, either in the overworld or in our inventory, uses this sprite.

Okay, but why would there be a NES section/world? Well, there is already TWO possibilies. While Dragon Blazers is the most notable and talked about example, which I will talk about soon, it should be noted most people forget that Kris and Asriel own a console alongside a copy of the game Cat Petterz RPG, and we know that Dark Fountain is located in the Dreemurr's household, so there is that possibility. Of course, the reason people go with Dragon Blazers is due to the fact that Noelle describes the DR battle system as being like that game and there is a lot of references to that game in both the game and in the Spamton Sweepstakes (with the ice maze being a more famous example). Of course, we don't know what Dragon Blazers looks like, right? Well.....

(DISCLAIMER: I PERSONALLY do not believe Skies Forever Blue is Connected to Deltarune beside themes Toby has used in a majority of his works, but I am including it here because I know it will be brought up)

...here is that idea I said I didn't like. It's been theorized that Dragon Blazers is the game in Skies Forever Blue, since both Noelle's version and the game in the Music Video are shown to be handheld, UTDR and the game in the video having RPG deconstructionist themes, and the fact the only fight we see in the MV is of a dragon. Regardless weather or not you believe it is, I will take a look at the boy and girl sprites we see in the video and see if they match up with this Lancer sprite.

Okay so right of the bat both sprites have a similar pastel/NES color palette, colored outlines, and a use the same perspectives. But, the Lancer sprite's outline has a couple of different of colors, though you could argue the (blue) boy's headband and hair are similar to lancer's hand and head outline in the sprite. Like I said, I don't personally believe Skies Forever Blue is connected to Deltarune, but just wanted to included it here.

In Conclusion: Lancer's spin sprite from the Spamton Sweepstakes is going to be use in an NES/retro gaming inspired section in a future chapter. Of course, this is assuming that this sprite was not for a one-off gag, which it might, and also assuming we are getting said NES section, that could either be Cat Petterz RPG, Dragon Blazers, or both. Sorry if this post is long but I had this on my mind recently and wanted to get it out, and I would love to hear any arguments and evidence for or against this.
